September 30, 2022 – Vicona provider of motion capture technology and motion measurement solutions, announced this week that it has won additional contracts with VR sandboxa location-based virtual reality (LBVR) provider, which announces the opening of six new sites.
Vicon’s partnership with Sandbox VR began in 2019 to support the launch of the Amber Sky 2088 experience, bringing true free-roaming capabilities to immersive Sandbox VR experiences for the first time. Vicon is used to track all players’ movements in real time, with high accuracy and low latency, to create a seamless gaming experience, according to the company. Vicon’s LBVR tracking technology has since been installed in over 26 Sandbox VR locations worldwide.
Inspired by the Star Trek ‘holodeck’, Sandbox VR offers futuristic virtual reality experiences for groups of up to six people, powered by Vicon’s LBVR tracking solution. The opening of the five new locations in North America and the first location in London, UK, is the latest step in Sandbox VR’s ambitious growth plans after a US$37 million Series B funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz at the end of 2021.
Steve Zhao, CEO of Sandbox VR, said, “I’ve always said that we started working with Vicon because we needed a real partner, not just a technology provider. The support we’ve received from Vicon over the past few years has been incredible, and we’re incredibly proud of the experiences we’ve been able to create together.
Imogen Moorhouse, CEO of Vicon, said, “Sandbox VR is a fantastic achievement for location-based virtual reality. The support for its expansion from investors and consumers is a testament to both the strength of its business and a hugely encouraging signal for the broader LBVR market as we recover from the post-pandemic era. The opening of the new North American and London locations is just the latest step, not just for Sandbox VR and Vicon, but for LBVR more generally, as it expands into what is expected to be a $20 billion market. dollars over the next five to six years. ”
